A. W. F. Edwards is one of the most influential mathematical geneticists in the history of the discipline. One of the last students of R. A. Fisher, Edwards pioneered the statistical analysis of phylogeny in collaboration with L. L. Cavalli-Sforza, and helped establish Fisher's concept of likelihood as a standard of statistical and scientific inference. Maladyczne zainteresowania J.I. Kraszewskiego rzutowały na jego koncepcje powieściowe, służyły mu do diagnozowania chorób społecznych. Takie strategie maladyczne widoczne są w powieści z początku lat 70. XIX wieku Morituri, która sugeruje już samym tytułem proces chorowania. Najwyrazistszy (i być może również potraktowany jako synekdocha) jest pod tym względem wątek generała Hugona Brańskiego, reprezentanta rodu arystokratycznego, którego upadek jest tematem dzieła (pisarz podejmował ten temat również w innych powieściach). Literacki opis popadania generała w chorobę jest artystycznym przykładem klinicznego obrazu schizofrenii paranoidalnej. (...) W deskrypcji tej wykazał się Kraszewski intuicją, być może także zdolnością obserwacjii prawdopodobnie wiedzą o tym schorzeniu (jeszcze wtedy nienazwanym) wyniesioną z ówczesnej literatury medycznej. This paper distinguishes three concepts of "race": bio-genomic cluster/race, biological race, and social race. We map out realism, antirealism, and conventionalism about each of these, in three important historical episodes: Frank Livingstone and Theodosius Dobzhansky in 1962, A.W.F. Edwards' 2003 response to Lewontin (1972), and contemporary discourse. Semantics is especially crucial to the first episode, while normativity is central to the second. Upon inspection, each episode also reveals a variety of commitments to the metaphysics of race. Whether they were or were not adequate to establish the point I was seeking to make I leave to the judgement of others, but the idiom possesses interest of its own, and it seems worth while to quote some further instances of it that I have noted since my article appeared.
